Benefits of a bridge

Main benefits

The case for a new bridge, rather than a tunnel, is straightforward:

  • It’s cheaper to build and maintain ($2.5 billion vs. $3.7-$4.1 billion)
  • It can carry more vehicles and people
  • It offers a range of wider economic benefits
  • It encompasses a number of environmental and social benefits

New funding models:

The new bridge would lend itself well to a number of alternative funding models, including:

  • Infrastructure bonds
  • Public-private partnership (PPP)
  • Electronic tolling
  • Special purpose legal vehicle (SPV) – similar to Transpower’s ownership of the HVDC Cook Strait Link
  • Regional fuel tax

Network resilience:

A new bridge could be future-proofed against most of the likely threats to network connectivity. Click here to learn more.

Bring construction forward:

We’re not just calling for a new bridge to be built, we’re calling for it to be built sooner rather than later.  Bringing construction forward would allow us to realise all the benefits of the bridge sooner. It would also mean:

  • Provide economic stimulus (over 10,000 jobs could be created)
  • Ensure a fitting monument to commemorate the ANZAC Day centenary
  • Ensure cohesion with the construction of the Victoria Park tunnel and the development of Wynyard Quarter
