What we’re proposing for Auckland is nothing new: around the world, there are numerous examples of urban regeneration projects that have transformed cities and produced the same type of benefits that we envisage for Auckland.

1: Portland, Oregon

The Portland waterfront was transformed in the mid 1970s through the replacement of the Harbor Drive freeway with a waterfront park.

	Before: Harbor Drive in 1964 The waterfront is totally dominated by motorways (like Auckland is today)
	During: Extensive deconstruction of Harbor Drive freeway to release the waterfront
	After: Downtown Portland today

2: Bilbao, Spain

In Bilbao, dramatic architecture transformed a fishing port into an important tourist attraction.

	Completed in 1997, the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao, Spain has had a major impact on the local economy. The benefits have been estimated at NZ$200 million annually, including a 500% increase in tourism revenue. The economic benefits represent the equivalent of 4,415 jobs.
